Lots going on downtown... Bonefire leaving, Babycakes owners takes runnerup spot

Hello friends and Happy New Year! I pray everyone enjoyed their holidays. I enjoyed spending time with my friends and family. Well we have lots to catch up on so lets get started.

Our First Baby of the New Year Contest for Kingsport was announced last week and I’m happy to say that I knew the mommy Sunny Hodges when she was a baby. This was a contest I worked diligently on and it paid off - they have a lot of things to pick up and do. Check out the local news page on this website and you can check out their picture and story if you missed it earlier this week.

I was crushed to find out that Bonefire Smokehouse was leaving downtown Kingsport. When I first started at the Daily News almost a year ago I simply sold advertisements to businesses downtown. Well, Bonefire Smokehouse was the first restaurant to give this gal a shot. Doug Beatty was an absolute pleasure to work with. I’m going to miss him and the gang, but I think I’ll miss those ribs equally. Their last night was on my birthday New Years Eve, so I didn’t make it by. They are relocating to Abingdon. Good luck guys, I wish you all the best.

Next up: Dykes Trucking, which is located 1009 Moreland Drive, Kingsport, has received their Tennessee Department of Transportation Certification. Dykes Trucking, a former 2011 Kingsport Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship winner (also known as KOSBE for excellence) have been open since 2009. The owner, Kim Dykes, said she started off with two customers and has now grown to thirty one with the help of KOSBE.
Dykes Trucking hauls asphalt, rock, salt - pretty much whatever she can get in the back of the trucks, she says. Hats off to you and the crew, Kim. Keep up the great work.

While we are talking about KOSBE, they announced their winners for 2012 last night at The Banq. I was pleased to find out that my friend Natalie Shortridge owner of Babycakes Cupcakery located on 231 Broad Street downtown was runner up for the Young Entrepreneurship award. I love the cupcakes and the staff, seeing as I had a part-time gig there while trying to land this job. Keep up the good work.

Well folks I’m going to get busy for next week but until then keep smiling and stay warm. That’s What’s Up Downtown and around.
